Recycle nuclear fuels

The reprocessing and recycling of used nuclear fuels makes it possible to recover the reusable nuclear material to manufacture a new fuel (MOX), which will then in turn generate more electricity. In this way, Orano participates in preserving natural resources.

Reprocessing and recycling is one of the French industry's centers of excellence and a form of know-how mastered for over 55 years in the plants at Orano la Hague (fuel reprocessing) and Orano Melox (fabrication of recycled MOX fuel).
  • 96% of the materials contained in used nuclear fuel can be recovered.
  • In France, one in 10 light bulbs works thanks to recycled nuclear fuel.
  • Ultimately, the recycling of uranium and the multi-recycling of fuels will bring the proportion of electricity generated using recycled materials up to between 25% and 30%.

What do you really know about the recycling of nuclear fuel?

Orano La Hague one of the French industry's centers of excellence in this field for over 55 years. Our facilities, which are practically the only ones of their kind in the world, allow energy materials to be recycled to produce low-carbon nuclear electricity.
